The concept of bon nou represents the 108 earthly desires and passions, which bring about suffering. Well, so the Buddhists say. There is a tradition to ring the large bell at Japanese temples 108 times on midnight of the eve of the New Year. It purifies our 108 sins of our past year, and readies us for another 108 in the coming year.
