When You Call My Name will be presented in Broome, Western Australia, with a special photographic exhibition at the Broome Historical Museum’s Sailmaker’s Shed from 30 August to 2 September 2026.
The exhibition brings together 20 photographic works connecting stories of wartime internment with people, families and places in Western Australia today.
Fourteen works were created in Broome in collaboration with members of the local Nikkei community, project facilitator JoAnne Shiosaki and Indigenous photographer Michael Jalaru Torres. Each work honours an internee who died during their time in internment.
A further six works were created by Ben Shiosaki with Nikkei families from across Western Australia, bringing together personal and family histories with landscapes, memory and place.
The exhibition also includes a participatory act of remembrance using 225 postcards created for When You Call My Name. As the names of the internees are heard through the project’s sound work, visitors are invited to take part in remembering each person through the calling of their name.
