KADO / KATO Kiroku
Born: 15 February 1882 – Died: 8 May 1942
Particulars:
Kiroku was born in Fukushima Prefecture in Japan. He was a single man with a brother in Fukushima. He was working as a miner in Kanaky / New Caledonia when the Pacific War broke out. He was taken to Australia and interned at Loveday Internment Camp in South Australia. A couple of months later, he died of tuberculosis at the age of 55. His grave is in the Japanese Cemetery in Cowra, New South Wales, Australia.

Artist/s Statement:
We wove maps of Fukushima and Kanaky / New Caledonia together to show how Kiroku’s life was interwoven between all his experiences. Then we digitally combined this with photos from visiting family in New Caledonia and trips to Japan.
Artist Bio:
Ferina Ekawati and Madeline Louys are a mother and daughter team. Ferina was born in Bandung, Indonesia. After studying in Japan, she settled in Australia 14 years ago, where she still enjoys Japanese food and anime with her two children and partner. Ferina’s daughter Maddie is a primary school student in Canberra, Australia where she was born.
