知られざる、日本とマオリ文化の関係
ニュージーランドの先住民マオリ族の人達は、自分の国を
マオリ語で「長く白い雲の地」を意味する、
アオテアロア（Aotearoa）と呼ぶ。
このアオテアロアの北島南部で生まれ育ったのが
マオリ民族のプロフェット（預言者）、
タフポティキ・ウィレム・ラータナである。
彼には日本との知られざる友好関係があった。
それを皆さんと一緒に、このブログで追い求めてみたいと思う。
アオテアロア (ニュージーランド) の北島南部で生まれ育った農夫、 タフポティキ・ウィレム・ラータナ （Tahupōtiki Wiremu Rātana / T.W.ラータナ 1873-1939年）は、1918年に聖霊の訪問を受けたと言う。その影響でその後、信仰ヒーラーとして広く知られるようになった。そしてスピリチャルリーダーとしての伝導活動を通し、ラータナ教会を創立したのである。
彼が聖霊訪問を受けたころ、マオリの人たちはスペイン風邪や貧困に苦しんでいた。イギリス政府と先住民マオリ諸部族との間で、主権、土地所有権、国民権利などを明確にするための ワイタンギ条約 が、1840年に結ばれたにもかかわらず、イギリス人入植者は条約を忘れ、マオリの人々は土地や権利をなくし、生活に苦しんでいたのである。そこでラータナは、先住民 マオリ の土地権利や生活のため政局への働きも行った。マオリの政治家を育成し、 労働党 と共にマオリの票を集め、動かし、国の政治にも大きな影響を与え、これは、彼を責任者とした「ラータナ・ムーヴメント」として知られるようになった。彼の死後、現在も、毎年１月ラータナ村で行われるラータナの誕生記念イベントには、国の総理大臣をはじめ、与野党共に数多くの政治が駆けつけ、彼の業績を忍んでいる。
1924（大正13年）にT.W.ラータナは、秘書と家族、マオリダンサー、シンガー、ミュージシャンを含む39人のツアーを組みイギリスに渡航し、ロンドンで行われた大英帝国博覧会に参加した。その際、ワイタンギ条約が遵守されていないこと、それが法律としてきちんと成立されていないこと、またマオリの生活や権利に対しての苦情を訴えるため、当時の英国王ジョージ５世と英国総理大臣スタンリー・ボールドウィン首相に面会を申し出た。しかし、すげなく断られてしまう。次に彼はジュネーブの国際連盟へ面会も申請した。しかしそれもまた拒否された。当時の日本国在英国大使Siko Kusamaがラータナに協力し、国際連盟へ口添えを計ったにも拘わらず、ニュージーランド当局が妨害した
のである。
ラータナはロンドンでホーリネス教会の日本人Kito Haeretikiと知り合う。そして彼の誘いで、帰国の途中、日本に立ち寄ることになった。ヨーロッパで受けた対応に比べ、日本滞在中は、日本人の温かい受け入れに非常に感動したと言う。特に日本ホーリネス教団の 中田重治 司教との友情が芽生え、その後も長く日本との友好は続いた。その影響で、現在でもラータナ村の人達は、日本人に対し特別な思いを残しているのである。

Tahupōtiki Wiremu Rātana (T.W. Rātana 1873-1939), a farmer born and raised in the southern region of the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, was visited by the Holy Spirit in 1918 and became widely known as a faith healer. Along with his activities as a spiritual leader and the founder of the Rātana Church, T.W. Rātana continued to lobby the political authorities for the land rights and livelihoods of the Māori peoples. He brought forward Māori politicians, worked with the Labour Party to mobilise the Māori vote, and was responsible for the Rātana Movement, which had a significant impact on national politics. Even today the annual Rātana Birthday celebrations in Rātana pa in January are attended by the Prime Minister of the country and many other political figures from both the ruling and opposition parties.
At the time of T.W. Rātana ‘s visitation, Māori people were suffering from the Spanish flu and poverty, and despite the Treaty of Waitangi between the British Government and the indigenous Māori tribes in 1840 to clarify sovereignty, land ownership, protection and national rights, settlers forgot about the treaty and Māori people continued to lose their land and their rights, and struggled.
In 1924, T.W. Rātana organised a tour of 39 people, including his secretary and family, Māori dancers, singers, and musicians, and travelled to England to attend the British Empire Exhibition outside London. While there, he petitioned the then King George V of England and the then Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, for a meeting to inform that the Treaty of Waitangi was not being followed, that it had not been passed into law, and to speak about Māori struggles and rights, but was refused. Next, he also applied for a visit to the League of Nations in Geneva, but that too was refused. The Japanese ambassador to England at the time, Ambassador Siko Kusama, cooperated with T.W. Rātana and attempted to speak with the to the League of Nations, but the New Zealand authorities interfered.
On his way back to Japan, Rātana came to Japan with Kito Haeretiki of the Holiness Church, a Japanese man he had met in London, and was impressed by the warm reception he received from the Japanese people, compared to the reception he had received in Europe. In particular, he developed a friendship with Bishop Juji Nakada of the Holiness Church of Japan, and the friendship with Japan has continued ever since. Even now, the people of Rātana village have special feelings towards the Japanese.
